Tokyo is known for its vibrant nightlife scene and offers a wide variety of bars and eateries to choose from. Whether you’re looking for traditional Japanese izakaya, hidden underground bars, or Time Out-style alleyways with a variety of international cuisines, there’s something for everyone in Tokyo. Here are three cool bars and eateries that are worth checking out:
SL Sakaba is a traditional Japanese izakaya that gets its name from an SL (Steam Locomotive) monument located near Shimbashi Station. The bar offers a wide variety of drinks, from beer to whiskey highballs, and traditional Japanese small dishes such as edamame, pork belly braised in soy-sauce based sauce, and Japanese-style fried chicken (chicken karaage).
Bar Zikkai is a hidden underground bar located in Ginza, Tokyo. The bar is styled like a library café and offers unique cocktails and food inspired by books. You can also enjoy reading books while you’re there, and they have some English books written by famous authors like Edward Gorey.
Toranomon Yokocho is an alleyway in Toranomon that has 26 famous restaurants. You can find a variety of cuisines, including Thai, Korean, Italian, and Japanese. There’s even an in-house gin distillery where you can get bottles of gin made right in Toranomon.
My favorite dish is 油淋鶏 (yōrinjī), a Chinese-style fried chicken with a delicious and tangy scallion sauce from Toranomon Distillery.
Tokyo has something for everyone. These three places are definitely worth checking out for a unique and memorable night out in the city.
